Bargain Value - August 2010

SAVE ON VACUUMS

August 31st 2010 13:43
Before you pay full-blown retail prices for a new vacuum cleaner,
consider your options. Vacuums take quite a bit of abuse over
their limited lifetimes---banging into furniture, clogging and simply
being dragged around from room to room.

The first step I recommend vacuum customers do is research
the test results at Consumer Reports magazine. The publication
offers unbiased by advertising, scientific test results on each model
they test. Their last vacuum test can be found in the October
2009 issue of the magazine.

Once you've narrowed down a make and model of interest, do the

traditional shop around routine to get a ballpark price range. And
don't forget online outlets.

However, to really save big: visit your local Sears repair/parts center.
Many of them offer barely used "reconditioned" models for at half the
retail price or less!

Yesterday, I dropped off my vacuum for repairs. The repair guy
told me they were running a special on upright vacuums at one
quarter of the retail price!

They had been used perhaps once or twice and then returned. Since
they couldn't be sold "as new," it was the repair center's job to move
them out the door as soon as possible.

The guy also told me buying an extended warranty on a vacuum is the
only extended warranty worth buying because the average homeowner
vacuum usually needs repair at least once during its lifetime.

That's for sure.

DOES ONLINE BANKING SAVE $$$?

August 18th 2010 14:37
Every time I open my mailed bank statement there's a
promo offer inside the envelope prompting me to sign up for
the banks "e-statements" or "online banking." The
offers of dubious quality try to entice us with contests and
sweepstakes entries.

Yeah, the convenience of online banking sounds great,
on the surface at least. But what myriad pit of financial
fraud vipers lie in wait beneath the trap door?

The world banking system is fully aware that their computer
systems are highly susceptible to attacks by sophisticated
hackers, most of whom originate attacks from overseas and

in most cases, are immune from prosecution. Eastern Europe,
Russia and China based hackers leading the surge.

The only ones truly saving money when you sign up for online
banking are the banks, at least in the short term. They save
on postage, labor and materials involved with mailing paper
statements.

In return, if we sign up, we open ourselves up to the high
probability that our accounts will be hacked into at some
point.

In the U.S., National Public Television recently ran an excellent
report on this very real threat to our financial security. Yet
another well-researched report on the current state of computer
security can be found in the current issue of "Technology Review"
magazine or online at: www.technologyreview.com. See the
article entitled, "The Growing Cyber Threat."

For now, it's safer to stick with good old fashioned check writing and
paper statements rather than falling down the cyber rabbit hole of
fraud and identity theft.

SAVE ON SHAVING

August 12th 2010 12:27
If you like a high quality razor blade for shaving but balk at
paying full retail markup, there are ways to save without
sacrificing quality.

The so called "razor blade business model" is that the
major razor blade corporations will sell you your first
refillable razor and a few blades at a relatively low
price and then hit you up hard for the refill blades.

Here's a few tips to beat them at their game:

1) Check for closeout razor blade products at supermarket
chains. Many times you'll find they want to move razors
that don't sell out the door at a low price.

2) Get on the Gillette website. You can sign up for a fist full
of coupons.

3) Shick runs rebate offers on their website from time to time.
There's one currently running until August 18, 2010.

4) Buy your blades in large bulk packages at warehouse
stores like Costco, BJs, Sam's Club, etc.

5) And of course, watch the Sunday papers and your local
stores for shaving products coupons.
