The Birthday Tracker

January 10th 2007 06:38
One area I’ve come up short in bargain hunting this past year is the area of gift giving. It’s not that I’ve spent “too much” usually, but rather that I’ve not planned my spending so I’ve not gotten the optimal gift.

Indeed, it seems like birthdays, Father’s Day, and Mother’s Days are crisis of epic proportion, but they shouldn’t be! We all know these days are coming, so why not plan for them

It's a Wonderfully Frugal Life

January 9th 2007 06:33
I watched, Frank Capra’s classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” this past Christmas. Thinking about it later, I was struck by one of George Bailey’s overlooked virtues. Everyone appreciates George’s selflessness, hard work, and courage.

But have you ever thought how George, in his wonderful life was the exemplary saver? In fact, without George’s savings, his life and it’s impact on others wouldn’t be so wonderful

The Gift of Time

December 22nd 2006 05:56
In my last piece, I wrote about practical gifts that can be practically used by your child. There’s one other key to understand, particularly in a small family. With many gifts, you’re giving something besides money, you’re implying a promise of time.

If you buy a child a board game, you should be willing to sit down and play it. You’ve in effect committed to that when you bought the present. Yes, if you’ve got more than one child they can play together, but there’s nothing like mom or dad joining the fray

One of the biggest wastes of money at Christmastime are the hundreds of dollars in toys bought for young, two and three-year-old kids. I remember visiting the house of family friends when I was a boy. Their children who were but toddlers had received dozens of new toys

Most of the toys were broken. Not all. It was only February. But throughout the year, I saw reminders of how rough little kids could be as expensive toys bit the dust and hundreds of dollars spent on them was simply gone

Being Cheap at Christmas

November 27th 2006 02:31
Many people look down on Penny Pinching at Christmas. ‘Tis the season to be free-spending we’re told.

As we’ve explained, gifts don’t define Christmas, but in our culture it can be a challenge, no one wants to be known as a cheapskate or a Scrooge. No one wants to say those dreaded words that are anathema to our nation’s beloved retail sector (“I can’t afford that.”) but you need to

As we get into the Christmas season, a couple basic principles have to be examined.

First and foremost is, what matters most? It’s a message where numerous TV shows, movies, and books have tried to hammer home. Christmas, we’re told, is not about the amount of presents you get, but about the love of family and friends. It’s about peace on Earth and the birth of the King

Don't Buy Without the Details

November 16th 2006 07:22
The devil is in the details, they always say, and not getting the details right will kill you. In addition to the numerous bargains I’ve gotten off Ebay, I’ve also got some things I really didn’t mean to by not reading the description fully. Once I thought I was bidding on a DVD Writer drive and only got the case. Wow! Talk about confusion.

To avoid getting the wrong item, read the whole description before purchasing anything off Ebay or online. Important questions to be sure of are
