BE A BENEVOLENT SCROOGE

This Christmas, instead of struggling to buy people on your list
gifts that they have no need of and will probably hate anyway,
save money by doing something useful for those truly in need,
yet pacifying the people who expect a gift from you.
Tell everyone on your holiday gift list that you have decided
to donate to a worthy charity that helps people and that the donation
will be made in honor of them. Also let them know that you
don't expect or really want a gift from them in return, but if they
really want to get you something, ask them to donate a modest
amount to a worthy charity of their choosing.
This is a radical concept, I know. But it can work. I've done
it with my family but unfortunately not everyone was willing to "buy
in" to the program.
So now I just say, "I don't expect any gifts and I'm not buying any.
The funds I would normally spend on holiday gift nonsense is
going to charity."
Of course, children are exempted from the program. They still
get a gift from me until they turn 18.
If you really think about it, giving people in the so-called
"First World" gifts who have no need of them on Christmas
is madness, one driven by retailers.
Isn't the true spirit of Christmas to give to those in need?
