ELECTRIC BIKES GROWING IN POPULARITY
November 15th 2009 14:22
A relatively new green industry is gathering steam, or should we
say watts of power these days. More and more consumers are
purchasing electric bicycles to use for short commutes within
40 miles of their homes.
In recent years a plethora of electric bicycle manufacturers have
quietly sprung up and are offering their gasoline saving products
through traditional big box retailers, catalogs and online sales.
An entry level E-Zip Trailz electric bike can be purchased for
under US$400. The bike is designed to be pedaled for the
most part with the 450 watt DC motor used for hill assists or
when one gets tired. Coasting speeds between 15 to 18 mph
can be obtained with a realistic range of 25 miles before the
battery requires a plug-in recharge.
On the high-end of the market is the Ultra Motors A2B electric
motorbike selling around $US2669. This machine can be pedaled
and has two battery packs--a lithium one built into the tube frame
and a detachable conventional battery pack which straps in
under the rear rack. The A2B has a range of 40 miles, has
a 500 watt motor, disc brakes and a full suspension for riding
comfort!
Electric bikes make sense for around town errands, short work
commutes and just plain fun on favorable weather days.
Now, when are manufacturers going to make us an affordable,
reliable electric car we can plug in at home?
