A Beautiful Vacation Bargain
January 25th 2007 06:25
Imagine, a picturesque little cabin out in the middle of nowhere, gated and on about half an acre of land. Wildlife and nature all around, beauty as far as the eye can see. The cabin comes with hot and cold running water and electricity. How much would you expect to pay for this type of accommodation in Montana in the height of tourist season?
Would you believe $45 a night? That’s what my wife and I paid for our Honeymoon Cabin in Western Montana. We enjoyed 10 days in the isolated patch of Montana. In the cabin were two books full of notes from those who had visited previously and we added our names. On our way home, we saw eight deer coming out on the road and got to take some pictures. It was a slow drive, but humans rarely get to see that many deer up close.
How did we get such an idyllic location? We reserved a Forest Service cabin. The US Forest Service has many cabins and lookouts they no longer use or use rarely. Rather than having them lie vacant, they rent them out.
I should be fair and note that most cabins are not as nice as ours. Indeed, a fair many cabins are quite rugged and rustic. If you love the great outdoors, though, the cabins are for you. However, depending on your skill as a hiker, you’ll want to choose carefully which cabins you reserve.
Forest Service cabins are an inexpensive vacation option. You can search all the forest service cabins at the country and even make online reservations at reserveusa.com

I missed your good ideas while I was offline, moving twice in 3 months (alot for a gal who prefers to move every 13 years or so
I knew someone who bought a cabin while her kids were small, and much enjoyed taking her kids there over the years. She paid a fraction of the price of private homes. Of course, it was not luxurious, but alot of fun and within her budget.
I'll be back for more of your good tips.

Theresa
