SAVVY SUPERMARKET STRATEGIES
December 7th 2009 20:45
The best way to stretch the weekly food dollars, is to not eat: Fast.
Barring that, try developing a plan before you enter the 12-ring
circus of supermarket aisles.
Consider each aisle your enemy, one carefully planned to extract the
most funds from your bank account while delivering the least amount
of product. Supermarket marketeers have made parting you from
your money a science, from the moment you walk in the door till
the cashier hits you up, as you leave, for a donation to some charity
in not your name, but the supermarket's!
Plan your shopping trip at home or in the office before you walk
through the land-of-ten thousand-and one distractions the supermarket
chains serve up on an hourly basis.
STRATEGY ONE: Write a list and stick to it. Take an inventory of your
refrigerator and cupboards before you go. Plan to only to buy what you
need and perhaps to stock up on nonperishable packaged items, if
they are seriously "on sale" in any particular week.
STRATEGY TWO: Follow your own shopping floor plan, not the one
carefully laid out for you by the corporate boys. Start with the boring
mid-store stuff: canned, boxed and jarred goods. Then move to the
breads and produce. Get the refrigerated items last, especially ice
cream and seafood.
STRATEGY THREE: Cross-check the prices for similar items like
cheese and cold cuts in various sections of the store--deli counter
and the dairy section.
STRATEGY FOUR: Get in and get out as quickly as possible. Try
not to be lulled in by canned music, employees giving out tiny weenie
samples and garish signage.
These are just four proven dollar saving supermarket strategies. More
to come in future posts. Do you have any that you'd like to share?
